This specimen is from William Hunter's collection. The specimens were utilised by Fabricius describing new species. The collection contains types from other contemporary entomologists such as Olivier and Drury.
A common and widespread African butterfly, also found in much of Asia. In all likelihood the specimen above with white hindwings is from Sierra Leone while this lower one is from the Cape Province. It is toxic and has a perfect mimic in the female of Hypolimnas misippus (see 127605) [Torben B. Larsen det.]
