"The Farriers" 1888

Royal s. in stone with butterfly; c.r. PRINT WAY, Thomas Robert; (English; 1861-1913) CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) "The Farriers" was Whistler's first treatment of the blacksmith theme in lithography. Here the view is through a large doorway into a dusky, beamed interior. The areas of deepest shadow reveal the pronounced grain of the transfer paper on which the image was sketched. This lithograph was printed by Thomas Way between June and December 1888.
