"A / Mon viel Ami Seymour Haden" CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT DELATRE, Auguste; Paris (French; 1822-1907) This subject was printed as the title page of the 'French Set' - "Douze eaux-fortes d'apres nature" (Twelve Etchings from Nature) published by Auguste Delatre in 1858. It is uncertain from which set this etching is derived. Whistler's preparatory pencil drawing for this etching, "Succes d'Ernesti a Cologne", is in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., USA, although the drawing appears in reverse (MacDonald 1995 (271)). An alternative title etching in an upright format also exists in a single impression in the British Museum. (See also GLAHA 46712).
This etching was bequeathed to the University of Glasgow by Joseph Whistler Revillon in 1955.
