"The Rose Drapery" c.1888 - 1895

Gilded reeded s. with a butterfly; b.l. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) It has been suggested that this watercolour stemmed from Whistler's interest in "Tanagra" statuettes: Greek terracotta figurines. The colour attentuates the classical association, as do the costume and pose of the model. The effect is harmonious and statuesque. Birnie Philip Bequest 1958.
