"Prudence and Desire" c.1912-15

IU s. b.r. "FRANCES MACNAIR" CRE MACNAIR, Frances Macdonald; (English; 1873-1921) This watercolour is one of a series of powerful late works by Frances Macdonald McNair. Two figures, probably male, gaze at a female figure. Her eyes are closed and her hair is shaped in the form of an apple and adorned with apples. The given title may reflect the dual imagery of the apple as a symbol of both wisdom and Eve's temptation.
