My father Ernst Hartung, born April 11, 1894 in Großtöpfer in Eichsfeld (Thuringia), died January 6, 1944, was deployed in France and Russia during the First World War. He had a brother, Hans, who died in France. Hartung took part in the Battle of the Somme and was promoted to lieutenant in the reserve during his service in the army.
