My grand-uncle, Michael Hogan, was from Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Before the war, he was an asylum attendant in Dublin, and from 1903 he worked for the Dublin Metropolitan Police. He left due to either police corruption or a failed romance, and joined the navy on 5 March 1915.
