A Boating Party in Cork Harbour

This painting shows a boating party landing on the centre of Cork Harbour. The background is dominated by a star-shaped fort of Spike Island which served in the 19th century as a prison for people sentenced to transportation to Australia. Atkinson’s painting serves to underline the distinction between the pleasure-seekers and the prisoners incarcerated not far from this scene.
