Mary Murphy served with the West Bridgford Hospital from December 1916 to 1919. During her time in the hospital Mary kept this autograph album where she collected messages from the soldiers she nursed, thanking her for the care she showed them.
The book contains a combination of humorous and poignant messages. There are a number of illustrations, some quite elaborate, and many short poems.

During her time in the hospital Mary kept this autograph album where she collected messages from the soldiers she nursed, thanking her for the care she showed them. The book contains a combination of humorous and poignant messages. There are a number of illustrations, some quite elaborate, and many short poems. One poem makes direct reference to the fact that she was Irish: “Here’s to a daughter of Eire Isle With an Irish name and an Irish smile May she be as aweet as a Colleen should And never tire of doing good” It was written by Private George Smith of the Scots Guards on 13 April 1917
