View of Cubbeer Burr, the celebrated Banian Tree on the Banks of the Nerbudda
Description: Plate four from the first volume of James Forbes'"Oriental Memoirs". Forbes(1749-1819)spent eighteen years of his working-life in Western India. He functioned as Collector in both Bharuch and Dabhoi in Gujarat. While in Bharuch, Forbes spent 'many delightful days with large parties' under the famous banyan tree, the 'Cubbeer Burr' on the island in the river Narmada. Explaining the illustration, Forbes writes that the tree afforded 'shelter to all travellers, particularly the religious tribes of Hindoos and is generally filled with a variety of birds, snakes and monkeys...The banian tree I am now describing, is called by the Hindoos Cubbeer Burr in memory of the favourite saint and was much resorted to by the English gentlemen from Baroche.'
