Belpaire, Alfred Jules
Alfred Jules Belpaire was a Belgian locomotive engineer who invented the Belpaire Firebox in 1860. These fireboxes had a bottom narrow enough to fit between the frames of a locomotive. They widened higher up to the width of the barrel, thus providing a larger steam space and greater water surface area in the hottest part of the boiler.
