Peace treaty between Estonia and Russia, appendix: English version of the treaty
Description: The most important document for the Estonian Republic is the Tartu Peace Treaty, which was concluded between Estonia and Russia on 2 February 1920. With this treaty, Russia was the first country in the world to legally recognise Estonia’s independence, renouncing 'voluntarily and forever all rights of sovereignty formerly held by Russia over the Estonian people and territory of Estonia'.The bilingual document showcased at the exhibition is an unofficial copy of the peace treaty concluded between the Estonian Republic and Soviet Russia in 1920, with the signatures of delegation members featured on the first page. Such copies were prepared by participants of peace negotiations as mutual souvenirs, either before or after signing a treaty. The document originates from the fund of the New York General Consulate of the Estonian Republic. The Embassy of the Estonian Republic gave the document to the Estonian National Archives in the years 1996–1998. There are four known unofficial copies of the peace treaty in the National Archives. Somebody took the copy in question with them while fleeing from Estonia in 1944. The fact that it has not been possible to find any exact information on the owner of the document does not significantly diminish its value.Preservation Department of the Estonian Historical Archives; Repository/Location: Estonian National Archives; method: web exhibhition [Exhibition]
