The photograph of Denis Hayes was taken at Papadopoli when he was was disguised as an Italian troup in this group for reconnaissance purposes. He died in 1961.
These four letters were written from France and Italy in 1917 and 1918 by Denis Hayes. He was a native of Ballydehob, West Cork. He was working in the civil service in London and joined the British army at the age of 17. He fought at Ypres, Bullecourt and Passchendaele. He was wounded twice and taken out of action. While he was recuperating he studied French and Italian and became an interpreter. He survived the war and later came back to Dublin and worked as a civil servant.
