These letters were to written to Nancy, the mother of Brendan Ó Cathaoir, contributor, from her cousin Matthew Burke, who enlisted in September 1914. Matthew, who was from Co Clare in Ireland, wrote to Nancy in 1915 that he wished "this damn war was over. We are all very tired of the business, and life is very uncertain". He survived the intervening years of warfare to write to her on 5 November, 1918: "Victory in sight. Four terrible years of destruction."
