In-depth: Methane
In 1776, Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) collected gas rising in tiny bubbles from the muddy waters of Lake Maggiore. He called the gas "inflammable air native to marshes." Volta had thus discovered methane, a colorless and odorless hydrocarbon, which is the main component of natural gas.
