My maternal Gransfather: Sidney John Millward Smith
Captain Sidney John Millward Smith
Image of Attestation Form, Certificate of Service Form, Tool for lacing boots, and tool for lacing boots showing Canadian symbol on head. (Trench art ?) Grandfather.
My mother's father, having previously been in the British Army, joined up in 1914 with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served with them until 1918 when he left; having achieved the rank of Captain. I am attaching his Attestation Form, that is when he joined, and also his Certificate of Service, that is when he left in 1919. We have the tool, 'gadget', I do not know the correct name for it, which he used to lace up his Army boots. I am also attaching an image of it. It bears the symbol of Canada on its head ! I am delighted to have this opportunity to record his service. He is mentioned in the London Gazette and was brought to the attention of the Secretary of State for War, for valuable service rendered. I think he received a medal but we have no record of it.
