Silver cigarette box from Fr. James Sheridan to his nephew Brendan Kelly
A silver cigarette box
This silver cigarette box was given to my late husband Brendan Kelly of Bailibora, Co.Cavan by his uncle Rev. James Sheridan. Fr. Sheridan was born in 1887 (possibly in Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan) and after his ordination to the priethood he served as a chaplain in World War 1. Fr. James told us that he was hearing confessions on the night before the Battle of the Somme. A young soldier came to him and when he asked the soldier where was from, he replied 'Ballyjamesduff' and Fr. James said 'so am I'. After the battle, the soldiers made a presentation to him of this cigarette box. It is estimated that the box cost £27 in 1918 and it shows that the soldiers must have a thought a lot of him to give him such a gift. Fr. James came back and served in the Kilmore diocese until 1976.
