Joseph Walsh was born in Glasnevin in Dublin 1889, and joined the Royal Irish Rifles in 1906 having overstated his age. He served in India with the RIR, returning to Europe in October of 1914, when he was sent to the BEF. He suffered a wound in November that year and was returned to the UK, rejoining the 3rd RIR in December. He married Catherine Duggan of Rathcoole in 1915. He was transferred to the Military Foot Police in April 1918, and from there to the Class Z Reserve with an exemplary character in 1919.
