Patrick Hanley, Horsekeeper WW1
1.Box with Christmas 1914 with photo inside and inscription "With our best wishes for Christmas 1914. May God protect you and bring you home safe. Mary R & George RI. 2.Character Reference for Patrick Hanley. 3.Dicharge Certificate Serial No Z6063.
My grandfather, Patrick Hanley joined the Royal Field Artillery and then the Royal Army Veterinary Corps as a Horsekeeper. On his Character Certificate it says his character was exemplary. This cert is dated 24/4/1919. I never met him as he had passed away before I was born but I remember my Father telling me that his Father had returned from the Great War with a piece of shrapnel in his leg which he believed killed him a few years later. When he died the box, medals and papers were passed on to his sons and as my Father was the last surviving member of the family I inherited them when he died in 2001. I love the gift box with the photo inside of Queen Mary & King George & the inscription on the back which they gave as a present to the soldiers for Christmas 1914. My three children were very proud to bring these items into the classroom when they were young.
