    • Robert Arthur Ball was born in 1860 and was a chef in the Merchant Navy who had served on the S.S. Appam on the Cameroon expedition on 31 August 1914. The contributor states that he never transcribed his diary because the ship was under sealed orders. He served on the S.S.Abosso which was torpedoed by a German submarine off the northwest coast of Ireland and he drowned on 24/4/1917. His diary is from his time on this vessel.
