Title

A British soldier's family of three.

A photograph of a British soldier and his family.

Description

    • A British real photographic postcard
    • Flanked by his parents, a solemn-looking boy looks out at the viewer from this photograph, produced, according to the information contained within the stamp box on the reverse, by ‘Black & White Studios’. A cross has been pencilled beneath his soldier–father, and a pencil has also been used to scrawl some notes on the back. Some of the words are illegible, but others appear to say ‘Brown’, ‘blue eyes’, ’10 x 8’, ‘crop sleeves’ and ‘2.9.0.’. It is pure conjecture, but maybe these are instructions for hand-tinting and producing a separate portrait of the boy’s soldier–father alone, based on this photograph, perhaps for a loved one to treasure.
