Patrick Sarsfield Whelan
A well travelled solider: Patrick Whelan
Patrick was my Uncle in law. He originally joined ranks in 1904 and then rejoined to Sportsmen's (?) Regiment from Argentina. He came back for the war in 1914. In Baghdad he acquired a German Eisenbahn trophy from the front of a train which we still have in the attic somewhere. Patrick went back to Argentina after the war and died around 1974. My daughter Deri got a plaque for his grave in 1999. A solicitors in Buenos Aires had his medals and had held on to them after playing rugby in Limerick. Patrick is buried in a British Army plot in Buenos Aires.
