My grand-Uncle, Lance-Corporal Albert M. Dowling was born in Co. Cork where he served as an RIC Constable. In November 1915, his service began with the Irish Guards. On August 10, 1916, he sailed from Southampton and entered the war in the field on October 8, 1916. After being wounded twice, he joined a secondary regiment, the Machine Gun Guards, and was killed in action during the Battle of Ypres on October 13, 1917 at the age of 28. He is buried in Grave Reference X.C.9 in Artillery Wood Cemetery in Belgium near where he fell.
