Samuel Hughes, 10th Heavy Battery RGA
Samuel Hughes, member of the 10th Heavy Battery RGA
Prussian belt German shoulder board Photographs of and relating to Samuel Hughes
This is a collection of photos belonging to Samuel Hughes, my grandfather. He served in Gallipoli and he died in 1953. Hughes was born in Belfast but joined the army in Dublin. He was NCO during World War I. He also appears to have served in Germany. The photos show Hughes on campaign in Gallipoli, the Middle East and possibly Germany. I have other items that I didn't bring to the roadshow, but today I brought a Prussian belt and German officer's shoulder board. Rank badges and dcumentation show that Hughes reached the rank of BQMS (Battery Quarter Master Sergeant). The monkey in the picture is "Mary", the battery mascot. Later, Hughes worked for the Irish Press as a photographer and he is mentioned in 1916 dispatches.
